mantel project

 

 

project two was completed in much the same fashion as the board and batten project.

though this time my help came down with lyme disease, so a quick run to get antibiotics was necessary. the telltale sign of lyme disease: a bull's-eye rash surrounding the tick bite. :(

 

 

back to the project. there is a long open wall in my kitchen. 

i debated refinishing a beautiful, vintage chunk of furniture for this exact location but couldn't find anything in my price range that fit what i was looking for.  

 

then i noticed this picture while reading the blog, under the sycamore.  

 

 

i love the wood under the mantel.

a week later i was still loving the look so set out to do something similar in my kitchen.

 

i guess i forgot to take a true before picture but here is the wall in progress.

you can see the building of the mantel on the ground.

 

hundreds of cuts of molding and trim later and the mantel was finished.

i painted it white which meant painting numerous amounts of trim and at least two doors to match.

 

 

kyle cut all the wood for me from our land.

he did insist on supervising the assembly of the wood slices as they went up.

i decided to use velcro to secure the wood to the wall.

it was so much easier than glue and for the time being is holding up fairly well.

 i painted the wall behind the mantel a dark brown so the white would really pop.

it's actually the same color i used above the board and batten in the living room.
the photos make it look like it has a touch of green but it really doesn't.

the picture frames thrown on top of the mantel are just for perspective.

i'm currently working on a few projects to decorate the mantel.
